This is the asymmetrical knot which is also called Senneh or Persian knot. In the asymmetrical knot (also known as the jufti or false knot), one end of the knot is warped around a single strand of warp and then looped under the adjacent strand and pulled back around the strand, around which the next knot will be made.
Knots can be drawn to either the right or the left and are said to be open to the right or the left. In general terms the most significant difference in the use of one or the other knot is seen on the surface of the carpet, the asymmetrical knot allows a much higher knotting density than does the symmetrical and is thus much clearer and more effective in rendering the drawing of designs.
Thus the pattern can be made to contain more complex and detailed elements using the aymmetrical knot; indeed certain highly curved and elaborate lines are quite impossible to create using the symmetrical knot. |
