The Bakhtiari tribe inhabits the mountainous region of Zagros in the western part of Persia. About 1,600,000 of the Bakhtiari are living in Iran. There are over 50 different designs and qualities of these rustic and nomadic rugs being produced in this area.
The panelled garden design or Kheshti are the most sought after followed by the central medallion pattern and tree-of-life design concept. What are considered generally to be the finest examples of Bakhtiari weaving emanate from the small village of Chabal Shotur and the major town in that region, Shahr Kurd, whose products can be distinguished by their use of the Persian knot ( most other villages working with the Turkish knot) , being noted for medallion rugs reminiscent of pre-Pahlavi Esfahan.
Normally all rugs are group marketed as Bakhtiaris but in certain instances by way of individual identification they bear the name of the specific village of production such as - Feridan, Farah Dumbah, Boldaji, Saman, Bain, Luri, Owlad, etc.. and occasionally the more finely knotted items are referred to as Bibibaffs.
