Ardebil is a city in the north western part of Iran. This historical city is the birthplace of Shah Ismail, the founder of the Safavid Dynasty. It contains the famous Shaikh Safi mosque. Many Ardebil rugs are of Caucasian design with rectilinear geometric designs forming the nucleus.
Many regions in the north of Ardebil i.e. Azerbaijan, Kazakistan, Turkemistan, Armenia and Uzbekistan, are influenced by f Ardebil designs in their production of rugs.
Ardebil well known for its development of geometric designs has greatly influenced other rug making regions who have adopted and further extended the creative use of geometric designs in the manufacture of their own rugs.
The famous Sheikh Safi design of the l6th century now kept in the Victoria and Albert museum in London is a well known carpet from Ardebil. This Ardebil carpet was woven by a group of artisans headed by a Kashan artisan named Maqsud from 1539 - 1540.
