Consist of 10 to 12 different types made in various Turkish weaving centres from about the middle of the sixteenth century. Contrary to what the name implies, research has failed to identify any suitable weaving centres in those parts of Eastern Europe such as Hungary and the Balkans that were occupied around that time by the Ottoman Turks. The origin of the name can be traced back to the fact that so many Turkish woven rugs of this particular style have been found in churches and museums in that part of Eastern Europe which was once termed as Transylvania.
