One of the principle weaving areas of the Caucasus, stretching from the central east coast three or four hundred kilometres inland. The several towns located in the area include among others, Bidjov, Marasali, Baku and Saliani. It is hard to distinguish Shirwan rugs from those made in the more northerly Kuba and Daghestan districts since the design of the latter are allied. The principal differing features being that the backs of Shirwan rugs tend to be flat and those of Kuba and Daghestan tend to be ribbed, due to uneven warp tensions. The edges of Shirwan rugs are usually cast in white cotton. And those of Kuba and Daghestan in blue cotton. The name of Shirwan is given to the best quality modern Caucasian rugs rather than indicating a place of origin. Some lesser grade items sometimes employ Shirwan designs and are marketed as Shirwans.
