The first is of the type usually called in English star Kazak and the second Swastika, although its interlocking design can be interpreted as a version of the star, some of the second type have the swastika motifs standing in greater isolation on a less busy field. However, as with descriptions of Caucasian designs generally typical motifs found on various types of Kazaks. The interpretation by individual weavers varies widely within the overall format.
Caucasus design is attributed to a group of colourful rugs, many of which have a distinctive quatrefoil medallions in geometric design. Vestigial remains of this can be most clearly seen in the medallions, where end of the medallions at top and bottom can be read as two pairs of facing birds with crested heads.
Knots counts vary from about 700 to l,000 per sq cm.
