The most southerly of the main Caucasian provinces. just north of the present Iranian border. Many Karabagh rugs are close in style to north-west Persian Kurdish pieces. Many South Karabagh rugs have cotton wefts and a floral lattice composition obviously influenced by Persian models. One fairly definite characteristic of Karabagh rugs being that they have an all-wool foundation, the warps Z3S and wefts Z2S. Those pieces that have either cotton wefts or a mixture of cotton and wool are generally of the type which from the design could be either Persian or Caucasian.
