A town in the former Russian Azerbaijan. Was important marketing centre for Caucasian rug producing centres of Kazak, Karabagh and Shirvan. which in turn influenced Gendje design. One particular characteristic border design consists of a series of conjoined octagons. They rarely exhibit the bold large medallions associated with Kazaks, preferring small jewel-like polychromatic ornamentations. In colour, Gendje rugs tend to be bold with an abundant use of light bright shades – aquamarine, gold, yellow, emerald green etc.
