The Art and workshop Pile hand-weaving was probably brought into India during the Mogul conquest in the l6th Century and was profoundly influenced by Persian Culture, art and design after their envision into Persia.

The Textile tradition itself has much older history in India. The evidence of Persian culture and arts can be seen in both Indian painting and architecture of the period, as well as in the rug designs, and Persian aesthetic ideals and compositions remain an integral part of Indian weaving to this day. India was not merely a passive recipient of Persian artistic idea, however. The country had its own rich textile heritage, and it is quite probable that motifs and compositions used in Indian tapestry, cloth and fabric-weaving were incorporated from Persian rug designs.

India is now one of the largest exporters of oriental rugs to the West. It produces items in almost every conceivable quality, size and design, and has skilfully adapted a wide range of Persian workshop and village compositions to the requirements of Western furnishing tastes. The rug-making industry is based around the towns of Srinagar ( Kashmir) Jaipur, Amritsar, Agra, Varanasi, Bhadohi, Mirzapur, Khamariah and Ellora.

Indian rugs represent good value for money and recently has developed and produced very beautiful designs copied from old Agra and Persian Mahal, Meshkabad and other overall design rugs mainly for the US market, but Indian carpets, unlike Persian should be purchased as sound furnishing items, rather than investments.
