The origin of the geometric medallion-plain design can be traced back to Turkey. There are several villages where Yuruk rugs are being produced, all identifiable by their individual characteristics. They all consist of a double-wefted all-wool make-up. Their origin can be instantly determined by the colours - the background is either deep scarlet or a dull mauvish red, but both are unmistakable.
Usually there is a thin line of bright gold, a small but highly distinctive feature, and another of bright green in the supplementary shades. The wool is of above-average quality and the weave is finer and tighter than that of most of the new products from Turkish Villages. The village of Taspinar produces a similar design but in a somewhat looser weave and in garish colours (a hard bright red is common). |
