Yazd is a city near Kerman in South/central Persia being known as a town inhabited by followers of the Zoroastian religion. Marco Polo visited the town and recorded in glowing terms its wonderful streets.
Yazd now specializes in producing rugs in Kashan designs. They are not as finely woven as Kashans and the wool is of pooer quality, but they are attractive and rather less expensive. It is also a major centre of silk weaving, already well established at the time of Marco Polo's visit.
For several decades, the name of Yezd (Yazd) has been connected with Kerman carpets, as the manufacturers from the latter city have set up a number of looms in Yezd (Yazd) in order to satisfy the growing demand from western markets. |
