The Baluchis constitute one of the great tribal groups of Persia.
The Baluch tribe is a nomadic tribe that lives in the south-eastern part of Persia. They belong to the Sunni sect of Muslims and speak Baluch peculiar to this West Iranian branch of the of the Indo-European family.
Some of the Baluchi rugs are the coarsest rugs in the Turkoman group. They appear in a wide range of bold, geometric motifs including large octagons, cones, eight pointed stars and alternating rows of diamonds. Baluchis are woven along the Iran-Pakistan border and inside of Afghanistan. Persian Balouchi are more detailed than most Turkoman rugs and are finely knotted .
The most important and original Beluch rugs are made in the Province of Khorassan in Iran ( Mashhad region). Mashhad Baluch are normally finely knotted and are of better quality than those from Afganistan or Pakistan.
The other alien influences such as the basic Herati-pattern layout, and the traces of Uzbek gol are absorbed and incorporated into a Baluch design style.
