Agra, is a City in northern India producing a range of reasonably good quality rugs of mainly Persian Design, very similar to those made in the nearby town of Jaipur. The standard of Agra items is rather more varied, depending on whether local or Australian/New Zealand wool has been used.
They are also produced in French and Chinese inspired arrangements which are mostly decorative and are copied from old Persian designs such as Mahal, Arak, Meshabad and , Ziegler. . Agra rugs are now being produced in other weaving regions of India like Jaipur, Bhadohi and Varanasi.
Today most production is on a large scale and of low quality; designed solely for export, especially the American market and consists only of rough imitatiions modelled on Persian designs mostly from Sultanabad, Farahan, Mahal, Meshkabad, Zielger and other floral decorative designs. |
